No. 5 Monroe Mustangs Women’s Soccer Rolls Past Montgomery

ROCKVILLE, Md., September 2, 2022 – It was another dominant performance by the No. 5-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team on Friday, defeating host Montgomery College, 6-0, in the first game of the Tom Bichey Memorial Tournament. The Mustangs improve to 3-1 on the season with their third consecutive shutout, while the Raptors start their season 0-1.
 
Monroe turned on the heat once again on defense, allowing just one shot attempt in the game on Friday. In the Mustangs' most recent game at USC Lancaster, they did not allow a single shot. Monroe held a 24-1 edge in total shots in the win, including a 17-0 advantage in shots on goal.
 
Sabrina Bastos Da Silva led the Mustangs with six points in the win, scoring the team's first two goals and then assisting two more in the second half. Luci Schroder had a big day as well with three points on a goal and two assists. Louise Featherstone scored twice in the game for a four-point afternoon. Ema Cruz notched a goal as well, while Angel Fowler, and Erin Keyt each registered an assist.
 
Stephanie Hodgson and Lucia Martin had an easy day between the pipes for Monroe, splitting the shutout for Monroe, as Hodgson improves to 3-1 on the season. Montgomery's Lizzy Mayo allowed six goals and made 10 saves to take the loss.
 
Bastos Da Silva got things started for Monroe just after the 15-minute mark off an assist from Keyt to make it a 1-0 game. That scored held into the second half until she scored her second of the day, this time off an assist from Schroder in the 49th minute to make it a 2-0 game.
 
Ema Cruz got on the board moments after off a pass from Fowler to put Monroe ahead by three. The Mustangs kept the momentum going with Schroder's goal in the 52nd minute on Bastos Da Silva's first assist. Featherstone scored off another helper from Bastos Da Silva in the 55th minute, and scored once more in the 59th minute after a cross from Schroder, capping off the scoring for the game with Monroe's sixth of the afternoon.
 
The Mustangs are back at it on the final day of the Tom Bichey Memorial Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 4, with a matchup against Harford Community College at Montgomery. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
