No. 5 Monroe Mustangs Women’s Soccer Runs Shutout Streak to Four with Blanking of Harford

ROCKVILLE, Md., September 4, 2022 – It has been nearly 367 minutes of game time since the No. 5-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team has allowed as goal, as the Mustangs shut out Harford Community College, 5-0, Sunday afternoon at Montgomery College. Monroe's fourth straight shutout win improves its record to 4-1, while Harford suffers its first loss of the year to drop to 3-1.

After a quiet start to Sunday's contest, the Mustangs broke the scoreless tie in the 35th minute. Luci Schroder brought the ball into the offensive third down the right sideline, crossing it into the box to Erin Keyt, who redirected it past the keeper for the score to make it a 1-0 game. Just over three minutes later, Daniela De Souza sent one into the middle of the box, where Manuela Baptista Filipe turned it into the net to double the lead, eventually sending the game to halftime with Monroe ahead, 2-0.

In the 53rd minute, Sabrina Bastos Da Silva got on the board with assists credited to Schroder and Ema Cruz, making it a 3-0 match. Cruz then scored one of her own off a feed from De Souza in the 57th minute to put Monroe ahead by four. Late in the second half, Chrissie Burke set up Louise Featherstone for an 85th-minute netter, capping off the day with Monroe's fifth goal.

Stephanie Hodgson made two saves to pick up the shutout victory, improving her record to 4-1 on the season. Becky Brittell gave up two goals in the first half for Harford to shoulder her first loss and drop to 0-1.

Cruz led the team with three points on a goal and an assist in Sunday's win. Schroder and De Souza each added a pair of assists in the game. Keyt is credited with the game-winning goal.

Another incredible performance saw the Mustangs outshoot the Fighting Owls, 27-4, including a 15-4 edge in shots on goal. Monroe also had 10 corner kicks in the game, while the Fighting Owls earned just two.

The Mustangs are back on the road once again this coming weekend with a trip to Upstate New York. The weekend begins on Friday, Sept. 9, when they visit Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y.
