Monroe Mustangs Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Spartanburg Methodist and USC Lancaster to Wrap Up South Carolina Weekend

SPARTANBURG, S.C., September 17, 2022 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team had an efficient Saturday, taking down both Spartanburg Methodist College and USC Lancaster in three sets each on the final day of the Spartanburg Methodist College Classic. With the wins, the Mustangs improve to 17-6 overall on the season.
 
MATCH 1: Monroe 3, Spartanburg Methodist 0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-22)
The Mustangs got off to a fast start in Saturday's opener with host Spartanburg Methodist, nearly doubling up the Pioneers with a 25-13 win in the opening set. Monroe went up two sets to none with a 25-17 win in Game 2. The Pioneers did not go down without a fight, but the Mustangs held them off with a 25-22 victory in the third frame to complete the swep.
 
Yaliancis Flores led Monroe with 10 kills in the win, adding 11 digs to complete a double-double, as well as three service aces. Manon Braunsteffer added eight kills and hit .467. Francesca Andreon passed around 33 assists, while also throwing down five kills on nine attacks (.556). Laura Paniagua picked up a team-high 14 digs to go with five assists and three aces, while Alessia Gallo totaled 12 digs and Doriangelis Serrano Reynoso added 11.
 
MATCH 2: Monroe 3, USC Lancaster 0
The Mustangs looked even stronger in their second match of the day against the Lancers. The got things going with a 25-14 win in the first set, followed by a 25-16 conquest in the second. Monroe then had its most dominant set of the season with a 25-4 win to close out the match. Monroe hit an incredible .353 in the win.
 
Leanisse Solano took the lead offensively with 13 kills against USC Lancaster, hitting .571 in the process. Flores hit .600 with a total of nine kills, added nine assists and six digs as she moved to setter in the third set. Andreon had another 16 assists in the match. Serrano Reynoso led the team with nine digs in Match 2, while Paniagua picked up eight. Rebecca Jackson, Gabriela Aimi Zuquelo and Braunsteffer each had two blocks in the win. Flores, Gallo and Andreon each served up two aces.
 
The Mustangs take a bit of a break before getting back to work on Saturday, Oct. 1. They will visit Montgomery College in Rockville, Md., that day for a tri-match. Monroe takes on Montgomery at 12 p.m., followed by Potomac State College of WVU at 2 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
