ROCKVILLE, Md., October 1, 2022 – After a full two weeks since the team's last match, the Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team shook off the rust to pick up a pair of victories in a tri-match at Montgomery College on Saturday. The Mustangs defeated the host Raptors in four sets before a quick three-set win over Potomac State College of WVU. The Mustangs improve to 19-6 overall on the season with the wins.
MATCH 1: Monroe 3, Montgomery 1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-11, 25-12)
The rust showed for the Mustangs to open their first match of the day, as they struggled in the first game, falling to the Raptors, 25-22. It was all Mustangs from that point on, first with a 25-16 win to even the match. A 25-11 victory in the third set showed the Mustangs were back in a rhythm, and then a 25-12 conquest closed out the match in four.
Yaliancis Flores and
Leanisse Solano had a pair of huge matches for the Mustangs in Saturday's opener. Flores finished with 19 kills and 14 digs for a double-double, while Solano joined her with 14 kills and 11 digs.
Izabela Wos was next on the team with seven kills, hitting a team-high .583. Wos also led the team with a pair of blocks.
Francesca Andreon set a new season-high with 51 assists in the win.
Laura Paniagua narrowly edged out Flores for the team lead with 15 digs in the match, but she also matched a career-high with eight service aces.
MATCH 2: Monroe 3, Potomac State 0 (25-7, 25-10, 25-12)
It was a complete effort for the Mustangs in the second match of the day, as they hit an absurd .432 in the match, while holding the Catamounts to a -.064 hitting percentage. The Mustangs lost the first point of the match, but went on to take the next 16 to assert their dominance. The 25-7 opening-set win set the tone for the rest of the afternoon, as the Mustangs came out hot in each frame to take an insurmountable early lead.
Gabriela Aimi Zuquelo took the lead in Monroe's second match, totaling 11 kills with six digs.
Manon Braunsteffer had a highly efficient match with seven kills on nine swings (.778), as well as a pair of blocks.
Doriangelis Serrano Reynoso threw down six kills on nine attacks (.667), while also adding eight digs and a team-high four service aces.
Maja Diop and Andreon split setter duties in this one, totaling 16 and 11 assists, respectively. Paniagua once again led in digs with 10, while serving up another three aces as well.
Back on the road go the Mustangs next weekend for a tri-match at Northern Virginia Community College. They will take on Bryant & Stratton College (Va.) at 1:30 p.m. before challenging the host Nighthawks at 3:30 p.m.
