LANCASTER, S.C., August 28, 2022 – The ball spent the majority of its time in the Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team's offensive third on Sunday, as the Mustangs shut out USC Lancaster, 3-0, without allowing a single shot attempt in the win. The Mustangs improve to 2-1 on the season with the win, while the Lancers start their year 0-1.
The Mustangs had an absurd advantage in shots in the game, totaling 35 attempts while holding the Lancers without a single one. Monroe also held a 14-0 edge in shots on goal. Monroe also had all three of the game's corner kicks.
In a first half in which the Mustangs fired off 20 shot attempts and put 10 of them on goal, the lone goal of the first 45 minutes came off the foot of
Ema Cruz, who scored in the 18th minute off an assist from
Daniela De Souza, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 edge going into halftime.
In the 61st minute, the Mustangs doubled the lead when
Louise Featherstone potted her first goal as a Mustang, putting Monroe ahead, 2-0. Shortly after,
Luci Schroder netted her first of the year for the Mustangs in the 68th minute, set up by
Paige Coghill, to make it a 3-0 game.
Stephanie Hodgson registered a shutout victory in the win despite not facing a shot, improving her record to 2-1 on the year. Courtney Rogers made 10 saves for the Lancers, but allowed three goals to fall to 0-1.
The Mustangs will have a short return home before going back on the road next weekend to compete in the Montgomery College Tournament in Rockville, Md. They open the weekend on Friday, Sept. 2, with a 2 p.m. matchup against host Montgomery College.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
