TYLER, Texas, August 18, 2022 – A rematch from pool play in the 2021 NJCAA Div. I Women's Soccer Championship Tournament unfortunately had the same result, as the No. 5-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 final at No. 2 Tyler Junior College Thursday evening in the 2022 season opener at the Pat Hartley Field Complex. The Apaches open the year 1-0, while the Mustangs fall to 0-1.
With just about five minutes left in regulation, the Apaches drew a corner kick opportunity. Camille Marlin sent it in from the near corner, finding the head of Esalenna Galekhutle, who found an open top-left corner of the net for the lone score of the game, eventually giving Tyler the 1-0 victory.
Stephanie Hodgson played well in her first start for Monroe, but took the loss after stopping 4-of-5 shots on goal. Tyler's Daniella Wilken made five saves to hang on for the shutout win.
Sabrina Bastos da Silva led the Mustangs with four shots in the game.
Angel Fowler put her two attempts on net.
Karaline Gray and
Ina Turesson each registered a shot on goal, while
Ema Cruz also fired off a shot.
After a well-played game among Top-5 teams, the Mustangs will look to bounce back on Saturday on the same field when they take on No. 15 LSU-Eunice in a neutral-site matchup. The game is set for another 7 p.m. EST kickoff.
