KISSIMMEE, Fla., March 2, 2022 – Playing a rare single game on Wednesday after having a game rained out on Monday, the Monroe College Mustangs softball team dropped a 6-1 decision against undefeated Muskegon Community College at Fortune Road as part of The Spring Games in Florida.
Â
The game was quiet until the Jayhawks got on the board in the top of the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Willo Staal hit an RBI single to center, but the Mustangs limited the damage after that to trail by just a run.
Â
Muskegon managed to expand its lead in the top of the fourth. Morgan Knapp led off with a solo homer to left-center to make it a 2-0 ballgame. With two outs, Kendyll Bond doubled in Hayden Ruel from second to bring the score to 3-0, and then Brianna Pastor singled her in to put the Jayhawks up by four.
Â
Monroe got one back in the home half of the fourth.
Mya Jack led off with a single, and then
Thanysha Gil reached on an error that put runners on the corners for the Mustangs.
Nevaeh Gaynor grounded out to first, but it was enough to plate Jack from third and make it a 4-1 game after four.
Â
The Jayhawks added to the score once more in the top of the sixth. An error put Kennadi Dykstra on second to lead off the inning. After stealing third, she was brought in on a sacrifice fly by Bond to push the lead back to four. Pastor hit a double down the left-field line, and then Staal plated her with a single to right to bring the score to 6-1.
Â
MaKayla Thompson picked up the complete-game victory on Wednesday to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Hilda Sanchez took the loss for Monroe after yielding one run on three hits across three frames. Jack hit 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Mustangs in the game.
Â
The Mustangs will look to get in the win column on Thursday, March 3, when they continue their week at The Spring Games with two more contests. First, they take on Milwaukee School of Engineering JV at 10 a.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. matchup with Oakland Community College.
