CLERMONT, Fla., February 28, 2022 – The Monroe College Mustangs softball team dropped a pitcher's duel to Lake Michigan College, 2-0, on Monday in the Mustangs' 2022 season opener as part of The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. The Mustangs were scheduled to play the University of Dubuque JV team later in the day, but rain caused the game to get postponed.
Â
The Red Hawks did all of their damage in the bottom of the second. With runners on first and second, Sophia Hover doubled to left, bringing in a run to put the Red Hawks on top. A walk loaded the bases, and then Angela Schmidt singled to center to plate another run, but
Mya Jack was able to throw the next runner out at the plate to end the inning with Lake Michigan up, 2-0.
Â
Naidely Cabrera and
Hilda Sanchez both pitched well in their season debuts for the Mustangs. Cabrera allowed just the two runs across three innings, but took the loss to start the year 0-1. Sanchez did not yield a run in three innings of work in relief. Madi Vollman picked up the win for Lake Michigan with a complete game shutout. Cabrera also went 1-for-1 at the dish for Monroe with a double and a walk.
Â
With Monday's second contest postponed due to rain, the Mustangs will play next on Tuesday, March 1, with another pair of games on the docket. The Mustangs get another crack at Lake Michigan at 11:15 a.m., followed by a matchup with Muskegon Community College at 1:30 p.m. Tomorrow's games will be played at Fortune Road in Kissimmee, Fla.
