BROOKLYN, N.Y., February 16, 2022 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball had to go to overtime for the second straight game, but the Mustangs came out on top in a Region 15 matchup against ASA College, 73-64, Tuesday evening at The Post BK. The Mustangs improve to 23-6 overall and complete region play at 3-1, while ASA drops to 11-8 and 0-3.
The Mustangs led, 34-29, after the first half, but were outscored by the Avengers in the second frame, 31-26. The Mustangs had full control in overtime, though, rolling to a 13-4 edge over the extra five minutes to pick up the nine-point victory in Brooklyn.
Melvin Council Jr. totaled 34 points, seven steals and five rebounds in the win.
Hamdel Mohammed was next with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Tyje Kelton finished with seven points, three boards and two blocked shots.
Isac Ahnstrand contributed four points, four steals and two assists.
Braelon Joe led the team with seven assists on the evening.
The Mustangs wrap up the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 17, when they host Shots with Patience Prep at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
