NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., December 3, 2022 – The Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team held off a pair of big comebacks by Bryant & Stratton College (Va.) JV to pick up an 86-72 victory at the Monroe Athletic Complex on Saturday. Monroe improves to 7-1 overall with the win, while the Bobcats fall to 1-4.
The Mustangs immediately caught fire in the opening half on Saturday, rolling to an immediate 21-3 advantage over the Bobcats in the first five minutes. The visitors then turned things right back around, going on a 13-2 run to cut Monroe's lead down to seven. After two points for the Mustangs, Bryant & Stratton put together another big run, scoring 10-of-12 points to make it a one-point game at 27-26 with 7:52 left in the half. A three by
Prince-Malachi Reid shifted the momentum back in the Mustangs' favor, seeing them outscore the Bobcats, 18-7, over the final 7:25 of the opening half, including the final nine points of the period, to take a 45-33 advantage into the break.
Reid led the Mustangs with nine points at the break.
O'Shamiar Majette had eight points and five rebounds, while
Daniel McCollum added eight points of his own.
Richie Guillaume added seven points and a team-leading eight rebounds.
The Mustangs were still up 12 early in the second half, but a 12-1 run shortly after by the Bobcats had the game tied up at 51-51. The visitors momentarily took the lead by a point, but the Mustangs took it back and continued to narrowly hold off the Bobcats. Monroe's 62-61 lead later in the half soon became 71-63. A later 9-0 run for Monroe pushed the lead to 15 points at 80-65 with just 2:13 to play. Monroe's lead was double-digits the rest of the way, hanging on for the 14-point victory.
Jaheim Gregory led the team with 17 points in the game, adding seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Guillaume completed a double-double with 14 points and 14 boards to go with three assists and two steals. Majette finished with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.
The Mustangs are back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 6, when they visit the New York Military Academy JV team in Cornwall, N.Y. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
