Monroe Mustangs JV Men’s Basketball Rolls to Victory over Mount Saint Vincent JV

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., November 20, 2022 – The Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season on Sunday after defeating College of Mount Saint Vincent JV, 81-56, at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
 
The Mustangs scored the first nine points of the game on Sunday to take an early lead. Back-to-back threes by Xavier Washington and Prince-Malachi Reid put the Mustangs up, 30-12, with 7:43 to go in the half. The Dolphins rallied late, scoring 6-of-8 to cut the deficit down to 10, but the Mustangs picked up the final two points of the half to take a 38-24 advantage into halftime.
 
Reid led the team with 10 points at the break. Kofi Mends was next with eight points, while Jaheim Gregory and Richie Guillaume each had five. Ingel van Almenkerk led the team with four rebounds in the first half.
 
The Dolphins were back within 12 early in the first half, but the Mustangs responded with nine straight points to push the lead to 53-32 with 12:11 on the clock. Just after the midway point of the second half, the Dolphins scored nine straight points to get back within 14. The Mustangs turned things back around on both sides of the court, later using a 12-2 run to take a 75-49 advantage late in the second half. The Dolphins chipped away a bit late, but the Mustangs pushed the lead back to 28 points with 33 seconds to go. Christopher Garcia hit a three for the Dolphins 10 seconds later, but that proved to be the end of the scoring, as Monroe won by 25.
 
Reid led all scorers with 17 points in the win, adding five rebounds as well. Mends was next with 15 points and five boards of his own. Gregory and Beelgin Nieves both scored nine points in the game. Jefferson Liranzo led the team with seven rebounds.
 
The Mustangs are back at it once more before Thanksgiving when they host Harcum College JV on Wednesday, Nov. 23. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
