WEST PLAINS, Mo., November 18, 2022 – The No. 15-seeded Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team saw its trip to the 2022 NJCAA Div. I Women's Volleyball Championship at the West Plains Civic Center come to an end on Friday with a four-set defeat to No. 10 New Mexico Military Institute in the tournament's consolation bracket.
The Mustangs took the early edge in the opening set on Friday with an 8-3 lead, but the Broncos scored the next five to tie it up. The two teams traded runs throughout the remainder of the game. The Broncos had set point at 24-22, but the Mustangs responded with four straight to pick up a 26-24 win and go up, 1-0.
The Broncos held the lead for the majority of the second set, eventually picking up a 25-15 win to tie up the match. NMMI then went on a big run early in the third frame, scoring 14-of-15 points to go up, 16-3. The Broncos went on to win the game, 25-9, to take a 2-1 edge. Another early lead for the Broncos proved insurmountable, as NMMI picked up a 25-13 win in the fourth set to close out the match.
Yaliancis Flores and Leanisse Solano each registered a double-double in the match. Flores finished with 11 kills and 13 digs, while Solano threw down 10 kills with 10 digs. Manon Braunsteffer had five kills and a team-high three blocks. Francesca Andreon dished out 27 assists with seven digs and three kills. Laura Paniagua picked up 11 digs.
The Mustangs' season comes to an end with a 36-8 overall record, their best mark since going 28-3 back in 2015. The Mustangs had one of the longest winning streaks in the NJCAA this season, coming into the national tournament having won 22 straight matches.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
