No. 11 Monroe Mustangs Women’s Soccer Defeats Essex County to Advance to Region 20 Semifinals

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 29, 2022 – The No. 11-ranked Monroe Mustangs women's soccer team is heading to the Region 20 Championship Semifinals, as the Mustangs defeated Essex County College, 4-0, Saturday afternoon in the tournament quarterfinals at Skidelsky Field. The win improves the Mustangs to 8-2-2 overall, while the Wolverines drop to 4-4. The Mustangs are now set for a trip up to Rochester on Wednesday to take on Monroe Community College for a chance at the Region 20 Finals.

The Mustangs wasted no time getting on the board in Saturday's contest. In just the second minute of the game, Sabrina Bastos Da Silva found Luci Schroder right in front of the goal, where she saw plenty of daylight and put it in the net to make it an early 1-0 edge for Monroe.

The Mustangs then doubled the lead in the 20th minute. Essex's goalkeeper tried to jump on the ball before a shot could be fired off, but the ball ended up bouncing around with her out of position. Manuela Baptista Filipe was able to get the ball away from the defenders and fire at the open net for the score, pushing Monroe's lead to 2-0.

Late in the first half, the Mustangs got on the board once more. After Hannah Light played it into the offensive third down the right side of the field, she was met by a defender, but helped get the ball to Hanna Dormeyer, who fired from the top-right corner of the box over the keeper and into the net, making it a 3-0 match in the 42nd minute.

After taking the 3-0 lead into the second half, the Mustangs improved upon their advantage shortly into the new period. Erin Keyt managed to set up Schroder for her second score of the day, putting the Mustangs up, 4-0, in the 48th minute. That score stood the final 42 minutes of the game, as the Mustangs advanced with the shutout victory.

Stephanie Hodgson improves to 8-2-2 overall with her fifth shutout of the season, making a pair of saves in the win. Akyla Walcott took the loss for the Wolverines after yielding four goals with 10 saves.

The Mustangs outshot the Wolverines, 30-5, with a 16-2 edge in shots on goal in the game. The Mustangs also had 11 of the game's 12 corner kicks.

The Mustangs are set for a rematch with No. 6 Monroe Community College up in Rochester, N.Y. on Wednesday, Nov. 2, in the Region 20 Championship semifinals. Wednesday's kickoff is set for 4 p.m. The Mustangs and Tribunes played to a 2-2 stalemate in Monroe's trip to Rochester in early September.
