ROCHESTER, N.Y., November 2, 2022 – The No. 10-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at No. 6 Monroe Community College in Wednesday's Region 20 Championship semifinal matchup in Rochester. The Tribunes advance to Saturday's Region 20 Championship game against Harford Community College at Montgomery College, while the Mustangs are eliminated from the tournament.
After nearly 60 minutes of scoreless play, the Tribunes broke the tie just over 59 minutes into the contest. Niyah Jayde Rosado played a long cross into the box, then passed over to Sierra Edwards, who snuck it by the keeper to the left of the net to put the home team on top, 1-0, in the 60th minute. Edwards struck again for the Tribunes in the 83rd minute, doubling the lead at 2-0 late in the contest.
Juliet Marino earned the win in net for the Tribunes, making five saves without allowing a goal in 66:02. Addison Carr took over for the final 23:58, and made another two saves for the Tribunes. Stephanie Hodgson took her third loss of the season for the Mustangs, allowing two goals while making four stops.
The Mustangs outshot the Tribunes, 13-10, on the evening, while holding a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. The game had just three corner kicks, with the Mustangs taking two of them.
The Tribunes and will now take on Harford on Saturday in the East District Championship finals at Montgomery College.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
