CHESAPEAKE, Va., October 14, 2022 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team opened a three-match weekend in Virginia with a three-set victory against Bryant & Stratton College (Va.) Friday evening at Atlantic Shores Christian School. The Mustangs improve to 23-6 overall with their ninth straight win, while the Bobcats drop to 10-12.
The match got off to a close start, with the two teams splitting the first eight points of the evening. The Mustangs then went on their first run, scoring 7-of-9 to go up, 11-6. After a point by the Bobcats, the Mustangs turned up the heat and scored the next 14 points to pick up an impressive 25-7 win to take a 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs got off to a much more dominant start in the second stanza, scoring its first eight points and taking an early 10-1 advantage on the Bobcats. After the score hit 14-3, the Mustangs rattled off six straight points to go up by 16. They closed out the set with a 25-6 win to go up by two in the match.
The Mustangs looked to be running away with the final frame of the night with an 18-7 advantage, but the Bobcats battled back to make it competitive. The lead grew to 10 at 23-13, but the Bobcats then scored 6-of-7 points to make it a 24-19 score, but the Mustangs halted the run there to win, 25-19, to close out the sweep.
The Mustangs hit at a .449 clip in the win, while holding the Bobcats to a -.051 hitting percentage.
Yaliancis Flores led the Mustangs with 12 kills and hit .500 in the match. She also picked up eight digs and totaled three blocks.
Leanisse Solano was next with eight kills, adding seven digs.
Vanja Stefanovic and
Manon Braunsteffer each had seven kills in the match, hitting .700 and .600, respectively.
Rebecca Jackson led the team with five blocks in the win, while also throwing down four kills.
Francesca Andreon dished out a team-high 28 assists on Friday.
Laura Paniagua scooped up nine digs to lead the team, while also serving up a pair of aces.
Alessia Gallo provided four aces.
The Mustangs are back at it tomorrow, Oct. 15, when they head to Richard Bland College for a tri-match against the host Statesmen and Montgomery College. Monroe opens its day against Richard Bland at 12 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. match against Montgomery.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
