SELDEN, N.Y., September 11, 2021 – The No. 8-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team picked up its second straight victory on Saturday, defeating Suffolk County Community College on the road by a score of 7-1. The Mustangs improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Sharks drop to 0-1.
Julia Howard got the scoring going in the seventh minute off an assist from
Nyah Hood for an early 1-0 lead.
Sydoney Clarke then netted her first of the day at 25' to eventually give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead heading into the half.
Things started to pick up in the second frame.
Luana Grabias picked up a goal at 50' with an assist coming from Daniela de Souza to push the lead to three. Hood then made it 4-0 at 61'. Grabias scored once again at 70' off another helper from de Souza, and then Clarke picked her second of the day at 75', on de Souza's third assist of the game, to make it a 6-0 score. Suffolk's Ariel McDermott ended the shutout with a goal at 78', but
Regina Fiabema picked up one more Mustang goal at 86' to cap off the 7-1 win.
Stefane Rosa improved to 2-0 on the season after making two saves in Saturday's win.
Clarke and Grabias each scored twice in Saturday's victory. De Souza picked up a season-best three assists. Hood contributed three points with a goal and an assist.
The Mustangs will once again take to the road on Wednesday, Sept. 15, to visit Sussex County Community College in Newton, N.J. The game is set to kick off at 3:30 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 39 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 18 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
