Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball Falls in Weekend Finale at Niagara County

SANBORN, N.Y., December 5, 2021 – After a pair of victories to start the Upstate New York trip, the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team was unable to make it a perfect weekend, falling to Niagara County Community College, 79-49, Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs fall to 3-9 overall with the loss, while the Thunderwolves improve to 7-2.
 
The Mustangs fell behind early in the game, eventually looking at a 19-8 deficit heading into the second quarter. The lead grew a bit more for the home team in the second frame, going to the half with a score of 32-18. A 29-21 third quarter put the home team up, 61-39, heading to the fourth, before the Thunderwolves closed it out with an 18-10 advantage in the fourth.
 
Wentz reached the 20-point plateau for the second straight game on Sunday, finishing with exactly 20 in the game. Olivia Medford tallied eight points with a team-high 12 rebounds. Sara Carvajal-Caro also picked up eight points, adding seven boards and two assists.
 
The Mustangs will return home to play next on Saturday, Dec. 11, in the first day of the Monroe College Men's and Women's Mixer at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs will take on Monroe Community College at 4 p.m. in a rematch from this past Friday's matchup in Rochester.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
