Sangare and Medford Pick up Double-Doubles in Home Victory over Monroe Community College

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., December 11, 2021 – Both Amy Sangare and Olivia Medford registered double-doubles to help lift the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team to a 78-36 victory over Monroe Community College on the first day of the Monroe College Men's & Women's Mixer at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improved to 4-9 with the win, while the Tribunes fell to 2-6.

Sangare finished the game with 17 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, adding two blocks in a big game. Medford matched her with 17 points, also tallying 11 rebounds and five steals. Daja Wentz led the Mustangs with 18 points on the evening, adding five board, five assists and five steals in an all-around solid game. Naomi Barnwell contributed 10 points and eight boards.

Medford provided an immediate spark for the Mustangs, grabbing the opening tip-off, going straight to the hoop, and scoring while being fouled to complete a three-point play in the first five seconds. After a stop, Medford sank a jumper to put the Mustangs up by five. The Tribunes pulled within two at 8-6, but the Mustangs closed out the period with a 10-2 run from there, taking an 18-8 edge into the second frame.

The Mustangs opened up the second quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 28-8 lead with 6:01 left in the half. After a Tribunes basket, the Mustangs scored the next six points for a 34-10 difference with just under four minutes to play. The Tribunes scored the final bucket of the half, leaving the Mustangs up, 34-12, heading to the break.

Medford led all scorers with 11 points at the half, adding four rebounds and four steals. Daja Wentz tallied eight points, while Tanae Arnold netted six with three boards, three assists, four steals and a block.

The Mustangs pushed their lead to 31 points with a 49-18 edge with 4:12 left in the third. They went on to close out the third with a 57-22 lead over the Tribunes. It was much the same in the fourth, as the Mustangs outscored the Tribunes, 21-14, to claim a 78-36 victory.

The Mustangs are back at it tomorrow, Dec. 12, to conclude the Monroe College Men's & Women's Mixer at the Monroe Athletic Complex. They will play the final game of the weekend at 5 p.m., taking on Howard Community College.
