BOLIVIA, N.C., December 18, 2021 – A three-game weekend trip to North Carolina got off with a bang for the Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team, as they took down No. 22-ranked Brunswick Community College, 98-85, Friday evening in the team's first game at the Brunswick CC Holiday Classic. The Mustangs improve to 12-3 overall with their ninth straight victory, while the Dolphins' undefeated run comes to an end, dropping them to 8-1.
Friday's contest was tight throughout the first half, seeing the Mustangs hold onto a narrow 49-48 edge through the first 20 minutes. Monroe trailed for much of the second half, but turned it on late to outscore its host, 49-37, in the second frame to pick up the 13-point victory.
Melvin Council Jr. continued his huge start to the season, registering a double-double with team highs of 26 points and 13 rebounds in the win, adding a team bests of five assists and two steals as well. Council was also 12-of-13 from the free-throw line.
Keith Warren Jr. picked up 17 points with four assists.
Tyje Kelton tallied 15 points and nine boards, as well as an assist, a block and a steal, while
Isac Ahnstrand totaled 12 points.
Keon Gill went a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range off the bench to finish with nine points.
The Mustangs are already back in action, taking on Richard Bland College in their second contest at the Brunswick CC Holiday Classic on Saturday. The game tipped off at 1 p.m.
