Monroe Mustangs Men’s Basketball Loses Late Lead, Falls in Double Overtime to Richard Bland

BOLIVIA, N.C., December 19, 2021 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team saw a late lead disappear, eventually falling in a tough double-overtime matchup to Richard Bland College, 76-72, Saturday afternoon at the Brunswick CC Holiday Classic. The Mustangs fall to 12-4 overall and see their nine-game winning streak come to an end, while Richard Bland improves to 5-6.
 
The Mustangs led late in the second half, but saw the lead disappear in the final minutes, as the Statesmen forced overtime. Both teams were even at 6-6 in the first extra period, forcing another overtime frame. Richard Bland went on a run in the final five minutes to pick up the 76-72 upset victory.
 
Melvin Council Jr. led the team with 24 points in the game, adding eight rebounds and four assists. David Gordon registered a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. Keith Warren Jr. finished with 11 points, a team-high seven assists and two blocks.
 
The Mustangs will look to wrap up the weekend with a win when they take on Cape Fear Community College on Sunday, Dec. 19. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
