Monroe Mustangs Men’s Basketball Wraps up Texas Trip with Victory over Howard

LEVELLAND, Texas, November 21, 2021 – After a pair of tough overtime defeats to start the weekend, the Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team bounced back with a 76-65 victory over Howard College to close out the weekend at the Texan Classic, hosted by South Plains College at the Texan Dome. Monroe heads home with a 4-3 overall record, while Howard drops to 7-3.
 
Melvin Council Jr. continued to do his thing with 27 points, eight rebounds and six steals in the win. Jadon Archer was next with 14 points, seven boards and a team-high seven assists. David Gordon got the start and totaled nine points and five rebounds. Nikola Danicic picked up seven points and led the team with 10 rebounds and two blocks.
 
Monroe shot 46.7 percent (28-of-60) from the field in the win. They also made 84.2 percent (16-of-19) of their free throws.
 
The Mustangs will not get too comfortable at home, as they take to the road once again next weekend for the Jim Brown Classic, hosted by Hagerstown Community College in Hagerstown, Md. The weekend begins on Saturday, Nov. 27, with a 1:30 p.m. matchup against host Hagerstown.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 39 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 18 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
