Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball Cannot Hang on in Defeat at CCBC Catonsville

CATONSVILLE, Md., November 14, 2021 – A tough fourth quarter proved to be the difference on Sunday, as the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team dropped a 78-70 final at CCBC Catonsville. The Mustangs fall to 1-5 overall with the loss, while the Cardinals improve to 3-1 overall.
 
Sunday's matchup saw the Mustangs open up with a 12-4 lead after going on an 8-0 run. The Cardinals then fired back with a 10-2 run to tie the game. Each team made a bucket to close out the first quarter, going to the second with a 16-16 stalemate.
 
The Cardinals were able to jump into the lead early in the second quarter, going up, 26-22, with 7:32 left to play in the half. The lead grew to six points at 38-32, but the Mustangs responded with the final seven points of the half to take a 39-38 advantage into the break.
 
The run continued early in the second half, as the Mustangs expanded the lead to 43-38, but the Cardinals scored the next five to tie the game at 43-43. The Mustangs were able to go back into the lead and hold a 50-47 edge with 4:37 to go in the third, but the home team responded with nine straight to go up, 56-50. The game of runs continued, as the Mustangs netted the next eight points to close out the third with a 58-56 lead.
 
The Cardinals quickly jumped into the lead with the first four points of the fourth quarter. Monroe tied it up at 60-60, but CCBC Catonsville went on to go on a 16-2 run for a 76-62 advantage with just 1:31 to go. The Mustangs went on a short run down the stretch, but did not have enough time, falling by a score of 78-70.
 
Barnwell had another solid game, scoring a team-high 19 points to go with eight rebounds and two steals. Sara Carvajal-Caro registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Daja Wentz picked up 13 points to go with three rebounds and two assists. Tanae Arnold added 10 points and four boards.
 
The Mustangs will take another trip next weekend when they head down to Tallahassee, Fla. for a three-game weekend. The weekend begins with a matchup at Indian River State College on Friday, Nov. 19, at 4 p.m.

There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 18 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
