Monroe Mustangs Women’s Volleyball Beats Nassau in Three on Sophomore Night

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 19, 2021 – On a night on which they honored their three graduating sophomores, the Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team rolled to a three-set victory over Nassau Community College Tuesday evening at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 28-7 overall with the win, while Nassau falls to 8-12.
 
The Mustangs came out firing, scoring the first seven points of the opening set before the Lions got on the board on a service error. The Mustangs went up by 10 with a 12-2 advantage, but the Lions were able to cut the deficit a bit at 13-5. The Mustangs then scored four straight and 6-of-7 to take a 19-6 edge, forcing Nassau to take its second timeout. Monroe yielded just one more point, winning 25-7 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
Monroe jumped out to an early 10-2 advantage, but the Lions chipped away and kept it close, later trailing by six at 14-8. The Mustangs then went on a 6-1 run to take a 20-9 edge, rolling to the 25-11 victory to go up, 2-0.
 
Monroe made it an 8-0 lead in the third frame before the Lions got their first point of the game. The Mustangs picked up the next five after that before another point for the Lions made it 13-2. It was 15-5 before the Mustangs scored 4-of-5 to go up, 19-6. After a point for Nassau, the Mustangs picked up five in a row to force match point at 24-7. Nassau got one more point before the Mustangs closed it out with a 25-8 win for a straight set conquest.
 
The Mustangs spread the ball around in Tuesday's victory. Valeria Trinidad led the team with eight kills, while Alondra Ramos and Masoomeh Angooti followed right behind with seven apiece. Tereza Strnadlova and Yaliancis Flores were next with six kills each. Lyanis Rios had a team-high 20 assists, while Alisha Callender followed with 13. Callender and Trinidad each had two blocks in the win. Laura Paniagua led the team with 10 digs and served up six aces.
 
The Mustangs return to the road this Saturday, Oct. 23, when they travel to Rockville, Md., to take on Montgomery College. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 39 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 18 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
