ROCKVILLE, Md., October 23, 2021 – In the final match of the 2021 regular season, the Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team took care of business, defeating Montgomery College on the road in three sets. The Mustangs finish the regular season with a 29-7 overall record, while Montgomery falls to 12-8.
The opening set was even at the start, reaching a 12-12 stalemate early on. The Mustangs then turned a 16-14 lead in a 24-14 lead with an 8-0 run, later claiming the set, 25-15, to go up, 1-0.
Monroe rode that momentum into the next game, jumping out to a 7-1 lead. That lead reached nine points at 13-4, as Monroe continued to roll. Monroe's advantage peaked at 12 points when they reached set point at 24-12, eventually picking up a 25-14 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Monroe came out hot in the third set, running out to a 9-1 lead. Up 18-10, the Mustangs looked to be running away with it, but the Raptors scored 8-of-9 to get within a point at 19-18. The Mustangs responded by picking up 4-of-5 to take a 23-19 lead. The teams then traded the final four points back-and-forth, with the Mustangs hanging on for a 25-21 win to claim the match.
Yaliancis Flores threw down 10 kills to lead the Mustangs on Saturday.
Leanisse Solano was next with seven kills, adding nine digs as well.
Lyanis Rios dished out a team-high 22 assists to go with three aces.
Alisha Callender followed with 10 assists, a team-high four aces and nine digs.
Delaney Killeen had three kills, two blocks and two digs.
Alondra Ramos had two blocks of her own to go with five kills.
Laura Paniagua led the Mustangs with 22 digs.
The Mustangs are now set to play in next week's Region Championship match, taking on Harford Community College on Friday, Oct. 29, in Bel Air, Md. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 39 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 18 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
