Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Clarke Plays the Hero as No. 12 Monroe Mustangs Women’s Soccer Comes Back Late to Defeat Daytona State

MELBOURNE, Fla., October 1, 2021Sydoney Clarke came up clutch late in Friday's contest to help lead the No. 12-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team to a 2-1 comeback victory over Daytona State College at Eastern Florida State College. The Mustangs improve to 6-1-1 overall with the win, while the Falcons drop to 2-3.

A quiet first half saw its first goal of the game with 6:18 left on the clock. The Mustangs committed a foul in the goalie box, allowing Elena Diaz Trujillo to score on a penalty-kick opportunity, putting the Falcons up, 1-0, a lead they took into the half.

The score remained the same until the 73rd minute of the game. Luana Grabias played the ball in from the left wing, tapping it over to Clarke, who fired off a long shot from beyond the goalie box and into the back of the net to tie things up at 1-1 with 17:18 left on the clock.

Clarke then became the hero in the 89th minute of the game. After fighting off a pair of defenders, she once again fired off a near mirror-image of her previously goal, ripping it into the top-left corner of the net for what proved to be the game-winner with just 1:47 left in the second half.

Stefane Rosa improved to 5-1-1 on the year after making four saves and allowing just one goal in net.

The Mustangs will look to cap off the Florida trip on a strong note on Sunday, Oct. 3, when they face off with No. 4-ranked Eastern Florida State. The game is set to kick off at 10 a.m.
