NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 7, 2020 – It was a game of big runs, but the last one went to the visitors, as the Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team fell to Hamilton Hall Academy, 79-65, Friday evening in American Independent Post Grad and Collegiate Conference (AIPGCC) action at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Monroe falls to 8-13 overall and 5-4 in AIPGCC play, while the Rebels improve to 14-5 and 6-1.
Friday's contest got off to a tough start for the Mustangs, as the Rebels jumped out to an 18-8 lead over the first eight minutes of the first half. The Mustangs then went on a 15-6 run to get back within a point, but were unable to gain the lead at that point. Monroe kept it close throughout the rest of the half, but was unable to take control, trailing 42-38 heading into the break.
Luis Quinones led the Mustangs with eight points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals after 20 minutes of play.
Jerald Campbell matched Quinones' six rebounds while adding four points and two assists.
Keniah Lloyd tallied seven points with three boards, while
Jedidiah Ashton added six points and three rebounds of his own.
The Mustangs came out firing to open the second half, immediately going on a 12-0 run to take a 50-42 lead just five minutes into the half. The Mustangs stretched their lead to 11 at 54-43 with 12:21 on the clock, but 12 straight points by the Rebels put the visitors back on top with 8:47 to play. The teams traded the lead back-and-forth over the next few possessions, but a 10-point run by Hamilton Hall erased a narrow Mustang lead and put the Rebels up, 66-58. The Mustangs were unable to make a run and get back in the game after that, falling to the Rebels, 79-65.
Lloyd registered his first double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in the game. Ashton just missed one of his own with 14 points and nine boards. Quinones nearly reached a triple-double with 12 points, seven assists and nine rebounds.
Deandre Hayes and Campbell each tallied nine points, with Campbell also securing eight boards.
The Mustangs have a quick turnaround, as they host Harcum College JV on Saturday, Feb. 8, at the MAC. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. following the Monroe Mustangs women's basketball team's 2 p.m. matchup against Hostos Community College, and the Monroe Mustangs men's basketball team's 4 p.m. game against Covenant College Prep.
