Monroe Mustangs JV Men’s Basketball Falls Late to D3 No. 15 Hostos

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 13, 2020 – After the Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team held the lead for most of the second half, a big, late rally by NJCAA Div. III No. 15-ranked Hostos Community College gave the visitors a 97-89 win Thursday evening at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs fall to 11-14 overall with the loss, while the Caimans improve to 20-6.

After taking a slim 46-43 lead into the halftime break, the Mustangs were hot out of the gates in the second frame. Monroe opened the half with an 11-2 run, taking a 57-45 advantage with 16:18 to play. The lead reached 13 points at 61-48 shortly after, but seven straight points by the Caimans cut the deficit down to six. With 7:40 to play, Reggie Quezada hit a three for Hostos, tying the game at 74-74.

Keniah Lloyd hit a layup to give the Mustangs the lead once again, but Korey Williams hit a pair of free throws for Hostos to tie the game. The free throws kicked off an 11-0 run for the visitors, giving the Caimans an 85-76 edge with 4:45 on the clock. The Mustangs were unable to rally from that point forward, falling by eight at the final buzzer.

Jerald Campbell had a strong game for the Mustangs, shooting 9-of-12 from the field to finish with a team-high 21 points. He added five rebounds and a pair of assists. Lloyd finished with a season-high 17 rebounds, tallying nine points and blocking three shots as well. Jedidiah Ashton and Deandre Hayes each totaled 12 points in the game, while Luis Quinones picked up 10. James Paul and Erizander Laureano each finished with nine points.
