Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball Rolls Past Westchester for Third Straight Win

VALHALLA, N.Y., January 23, 2020 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team picked up its third straight victory on Thursday, taking down Westchester Community College, 79-28, at the Viking Gymnasium. Monroe improves to 12-9 overall with the win, while Westchester falls to 9-9.
 
The Mustangs opened the game on an 8-0 and never looked back on Thursday. The Mustangs rolled through the opening frame, taking a 19-4 edge into the second quarter.
 
The lead reached as many as 27 points when the Mustangs took a 32-5 edge with 6:04 to play in the half. The Vikings got back within 19 with a 10-2 run, but Monroe closed out the second quarter with seven straight points to take a 41-15 advantage into halftime.
 
The Mustangs buckled down even more in the third quarter, completely shutting out the Vikings for the entire 10-minute period. Monroe scored 20 points of its own to carry a 61-15 lead into the fourth quarter. The Vikings regained some rhythm in the fourth quarter to go toe-to-toe with the Mustangs, but Monroe still outscored its host, 18-13, to pick up the 51-point victory.
 
ToniRenee Blanford led the Mustangs with 14 points in the win, adding seven rebounds as well. Devon Adams tallied 11 points and led the team with a pair of blocks. Cheyenne Talbot and Ineysiah Surrell matched with 10 points apiece, while Talbot contributed six steals, five rebounds and three assists.
 
The Mustangs will take a longer road trip on Saturday, Jan. 25, when they visit Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pa. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
