Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball Routs Niagara in MLK Classic Opener, 80-46

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 18, 2020 – The Monroe Mustangs women's basketball team opened the 2020 MLK Classic on Saturday, defeating the Niagara County Community College Thunder Wolves, 80-46, behind an all-around team performance.
 
The win bumps the Mustangs to 10-9 overall on the season.
 
Freshman guard Cheyenne Talbot led the Mustangs with a game-high 19 points, four rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Sophomore India Keene poured in 17 points, burying five-of-eight from long range while picking up three rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
 
Freshman Daja Wentz led the Mustangs off the bench with 13 points, draining three-of-four from deep along with seven rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Devon Adams tallied 11 points and tied for a game-high nine rebounds. Freshman Maya Crimes had eight points and eight rebounds while Taylor Holmes added three points and five rebounds.
 
Freshman ToniRenee Blanford pulled down six rebounds while classmate Ineysiah Surrell grabbed five of her own.
 
The Mustangs allowed the Thunder Wolves to shoot 28.3 percent from floor and didn't allow more than six baskets in any quarter. The Mustangs shoot 49.2 % in the contest, shooting a season-high 57.9 percent from beyond the arc, while nailing a season-high 11 three-pointers. Monroe was also active on the glass all night, outrebounding the Thunder Wolves 51-to-27.
 
The Mustangs round out the MLK Classic on Sunday, Jan. 19, hosting the Erie Community College Kats in a 6 p.m. matchup at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
