NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 16, 2020 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team turned in a highly efficient offensive effort Thursday evening, racing past Hostos Community College, 118-67, at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The victory marks the second straight contest the Mustangs have surpassed the century mark, achieving their highest point total of the season.
The Mustangs improve to 13-7 overall with the win, while the Caimans drop to 13-5.
The Mustangs shot a scorching 57.1 percent from the floor and dished out 31 assists in the contest, their best performances of the season. Sophomore
Juan Felix Rodriguez paced the Mustangs with a career-high 33 points, going 13-of-18 from the field and five-of-six from deep. He also had a game-high 10 assists, nine rebounds, and three steals in the contest.
Sophomore
Zion Styles finished with 12 points, a game-high five steals, three rebounds, and two assists in the win.
Akeem Tate tallied 16 points, six rebounds, three steals, and a pair of assists in 26 minutes of action.
Jabari Merritt added 13 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals off the bench. Freshman
Julio Pascual picked up seven points, seven rebounds, and a game-high three blocks. Sophomore
Elijah Mitchell netted nine points, along with three boards and four assists while
Ja'mani Eaton recorded seven points, five assists, and four rebounds.
Up next, the Mustangs host the annual Monroe College MLK Classic this weekend at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Action gets underway on Saturday, Jan. 18, with a 4 p.m. matchup against Niagara County Community College.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 12 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
