NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 11, 2020 – In its first contest of 2020, the Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team took care of business with a dominant 106-55 victory over Roxbury Community College Saturday afternoon at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The 106 points are Monroe's highest total of the year and the team's first time over the century mark this season. The Mustangs improve to 12-7 overall with the win, while the Tigers drop to 6-6.
The game was tight at the start, as the Mustangs led by just a point at 9-8 just short of five minutes into the first half. Nine straight points then put the Mustangs up by 10. The Mustangs steadily improved their lead from there, turning it up late in the half to lead by as many as 26 points. The Tigers picked up the final four points of the first half, but the Mustangs took a 48-26 lead into the break.
Monroe's lead reached 30 points with 17:09 left to play in the second half. The big run continued, as the lead quickly hit 46 points with 11:17 still left to play. The Mustangs went up by 50 for the first time with a 90-40 advantage with 7:20 still on the clock, eventually carrying a 51-point lead through the final buzzer.
Six Mustangs scored in double figures on Saturday, with
Zion Styles leading the way with 17 points, adding six rebounds and four assists.
Juan Felix Rodriguez filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, nine assists, seven boards and three steals.
Luis Herrera netted 15 points with five boards. Ja'Mani Eaton picked up 12 points, while
Elijah Mitchell totaled 11 with five rebounds.
Jabari Merritt added another 10 points with seven boards and four assists.
The Mustangs shot 51.2 percent from the field on Saturday, adding 13 three-pointers out of 26 attempts (50 percent). They outrebounded the Tigers, 55-24. Monroe dominated from short range, scoring 58 points in the paint while allowing just 32, also picking up 23 second-chance points while only yielding six.
The Mustangs get back to work on Thursday, Jan. 16, when they host Hostos Community College at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
