No. 1 Monroe Mustangs Women’s Soccer Shuts out Essex on the Road

NEWARK, N.J., September 7, 2019 – The No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team flexed its muscle on the road on Saturday, blanking Essex County College by a score of 7-0. The Mustangs improve to 4-0 on the year with the win, while the Wolverines drop to 0-1-1.
 
It took just over 14 minutes, but the Mustangs caught fire and never looked back in Saturday's win. Sydoney Clarke scored the first goal at 14:16, and then scored again at the 15:50 mark to make it a 2-0 game. Just eight seconds later, Luana Grabias netted one for Monroe to make it a 3-0 score.
 
Isabella Andrea Tola made it a 4-0 lead for Monroe in the 27th minute. Clarke then completed the hat trick in the first half, scoring her third of the day in the 42nd minute to leave the Mustangs up, 5-0, heading into the halftime break.
 
Shortly after the break, Luana Grabias potted her second of the game at the 48:13 mark to push the lead to 6-0. Paula DePaiva Toledo capped things off with a goal at the 51:20 mark to make it a 7-0 game.
 
Mustang goalkeeper Stefane Rosa made six saves without allowing a goal to pick up the shutout victory and improve to 4-0 on the year. The shutout is also her third of the season. Makida Herbert made 17 stops but took the loss in goal for Essex.
 
Clarke scored three times in Saturday's win, her third multi-goal game of the season. Grabias scored twice and fired off a game-high 16 shots, putting 10 of them on net. Tola and DePaiva Toledo accounted for the other two scores for Monroe. DePaiva Toledo also added two assists in the win, while Laia Munoz Danon and Barbara Serrano each handed out one.
 
The Mustangs return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 11, when they visit the Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick, R.I. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 12 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
