SELDEN, N.Y., September 5, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team grabbed its first win of the season on Thursday with a 3-0 victory at Suffolk County Community College. The Mustangs improve to 1-5 on the year with the win, while the Sharks drop to 0-2.
The Mustangs got off to a hot start, opening up the first set with a quick 11-2 lead. The Mustangs had full control throughout the opening game, rolling to a 25-12 win to go up, 1-0.
The second stanza opened with a 4-4 stalemate before the Mustangs ran off six points to go up, 10-4. After a point for the Sharks, the Mustangs scored four more to take a nine-point advantage. The lead later reached 11 points, and after the Mustangs went up, 20-10, the Sharks scored four in a row to get within six. Monroe closed out the set scoring five of the last six points to take a 25-15 win.
The Sharks got off to a 5-2 lead in the third frame, but four straight points for the Mustangs put them back in the lead. The game was tied up at nine before Monroe went on a five-point run to start pulling away. The Mustangs were up by five late in the match before taking the last five points of the set to pick up a 25-15 win and a 3-0 sweep.
Giulia La Longa and
Lillian Olson shared the team lead with seven kills on the evening, while
Julia Alves added six.
Yarianne Gonzalez dished out 18 assists, while
Alondra Garcia registered 12.
Melanie Orsini led the team with 23 digs, as well as four service aces.
The Mustangs will get back to work on Saturday, Sept. 7, when they compete in a newly scheduled tri-match at Harford Community College. Monroe will take on Northern Virginia Community College in their first match at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. match against Harford.

There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 12 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
