BEL AIR, Md., September 7, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team picked up a pair of wins at a tri-match at Harford Community College on Saturday. The Mustangs first defeated Northern Virginia Community College, 3-0, before a straight set victory over host Harford. The Mustangs improve to 3-5 on the year with the pair of wins.
MATCH 1: MONROE 3, NORTHERN VIRGINIA 0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-10)
The Mustangs were dominant throughout the afternoon, beginning with three decisive sets against Northern Virginia. The Mustangs hit .326 as a team in the win, while holding the Nighthawks to a -.051 clip.
Juliana Minota led the team with nine kills in the win, adding a block and two digs.
Giulia La Longa and
Tereza Strnadlova each registered seven kills, while
Alondra Ramos added six of her own. Ramos also served up four aces and picked up eight digs.
Yarianne Gonzalez dished out a team-high 17 assists, while
Melanie Orsini picked up 15 digs.
MATCH 2: MONROE 3, HARFORD 0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-15)
The Mustangs rolled the momentum from their first win right into their second on Saturday. The Mustangs hit an impressive .412 in the match, including an incredible .667 in the second set, while holding Harford to a .000 hitting percentage.
Ramos was the kill leader in Saturday's finale with 10 to lead the team, and hit .714 in the win. She also had three total blocks and three digs. La Longa hit .636 en route to eight kills, added three blocks as well.
Lillian Olson had five kills and six service aces, as well as five digs. Gonzalez registered 14 assists, while
Alondra Garcia added 13.
The Mustangs will host the Monroe College Volleyball Invitational this coming weekend at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The tournament begins Thursday evening, Sept. 12, with a 7 p.m. match between the Mustangs and the College of Central Florida.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 12 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
