No. 1 Monroe Mustangs Women’s Soccer Opens with Dominant Shutout of CCBC-Essex

BALTIMORE, Md., August 24, 2019 – Fresh off an undefeated season and the 2018 NJCAA Div. I Women's Soccer Championship title, the No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team picked up right where it left off a year ago, defeating CCBC-Essex by a score of 15-0 on Saturday in the team's season opener at the CCBC-Essex Kickoff Classic. The Mustangs open the year at 1-0, while the Knights start off 0-1.

Mayra de Lima scored the first goal of the season for Monroe in the fourth minute of the game. The Mustangs scored four goals over the following 19 minutes, three of which came from Sydoney Clarke. The Mustangs wrapped up a big first half with an 8-0 advantage.

Monroe kept the momentum rolling in the second half, scoring twice in the first three minutes of the frame. The Mustangs steadily improved upon their lead the rest of the way, totaling seven scores in the second period to pick up the 15-0 win.

Clarke and fellow newcomer Isabelle Andrea Tola both netted game highs of four goals in the win, while Tola added an assist for a nine-point afternoon. Luana Grabias scored twice and assisted two others for a six-point day. Paula DePaiva Toledo matched Grabias with two scores and two helpers of her own. Kaitlyn Waterman, Marlen Guevara and de Lima added the other three goals in the win, while Barbara Serrano tallied an assist.

Goalkeeper Stefane Rosa needed just one save to pick up her first win and first shutout as a Mustang. Knight netminders Sam Tornatore and Peyton Apruzzese combined for 10 saves, but yielded 15 goals. The Mustangs dominated the field-position battle, firing off 28 shots compared to just four for their hosts.

The Mustangs will look to start 2-0 when they cap off the weekend against Montgomery College-Rockville on Sunday. The game is set to begin at 10 a.m.
