BALTIMORE, Md., August 25, 2019 – After a commanding 15-0 victory in Saturday's season opener against CCBC-Essex, No. 1 Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer toppled Montgomery College-Rockville on Sunday by a score of 9-1 to cap off a perfect 2-0 weekend at the CCBC-Essex Kickoff Classic. The Mustangs head home with a 2-0 record, while the Raptors drop to 0-2.
After a terrific debut on Saturday,
Sydoney Clarke was the star of the game once again in Sunday's contest. The freshman totaled a remarkable 13 points with five goals and three assists to lead Monroe to another win. Through two games, Clarke has 21 total points on nine goals and Sunday's three helpers.
Clarke got things started for the Mustangs with back-to-back goals in the 16th and 17th minutes of the game for an early 2-0 lead.
Luana Grabias then followed with two of her own to double the Mustangs' advantage.
Isabelle Andrea Tola added her fifth of the weekend at the 35:23 mark, and then Clarke completed the hat trick in the 39th minute to put the Mustangs up, 6-0, at halftime.
Clarke picked up another two goals to open the second half because Montgomery's Paulina Molina netted the Raptors' only goal of the day in the 58th minute.
Marlen Guevara then got on the board at 66:05 to wrap up the scoring for the day.
Stefane Rosa improved to 2-0 in net for the Mustangs after making five saves in the win. Raptor goalkeeper Nikki Shaffer drops to 0-2 after yielding nine scores.
Grabias finished with her two first-half goals, while Tola and Guevara added the other two for Monroe.
Laia Munoz Danon picked up her first assist of the year early in the second half.
The Mustangs are set for their home opener at Skidelsky Field at Flowers Park on Sunday, Sept. 1, against No. 6 Monroe Community College, which opened its season on Sunday with an 11-0 win over Finger Lakes Community College. Next Sunday's contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
