BRONX, N.Y., February 5, 2019 – In their third head-to-head matchup of the season, the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team picked up a 65-58 victory at Hostos Community College on Tuesday to win the season series. The Mustangs improve to 17-6 overall with the win, while Hostos falls to 20-5.
The Mustangs rolled early on, jumping out to an 8-0 lead across the first three minutes of the game. Shortly after, a 9-4 lead soon became a 13-9 deficit for the Mustangs, who later trailed, 18-13, at the end of the first.
Monroe trailed until the 5:39 mark of the second quarter, when a layup by
Aneisha Lyons put the Mustangs on top, 19-18. The Caimans managed to take control again, going up 30-22 with two minutes left in the half.
Devon Adams made the final bucket of the half to get Monroe back within six, but the home team held a 30-24 advantage heading into the break.
Monroe opened the second half on a 6-0 run to quickly tie the game. The Mustangs found a rhythm, later taking the lead again on a three by
Phyness Baldwin, followed by a layup from
Destiny Jennings to make it a 35-32 game. Both teams traded the lead throughout the remainder of the third, seeing the Mustangs go up, 43-40 with 2:04 remaining. Hostos was then able to rattle off five straight points to close out the quarter, taking a 45-43 edge into the final frame.
The Caimans extended their lead to four 13 seconds into the fourth, but the Mustangs followed with nine straight points to claim a 52-47 advantage. The Mustangs continued a dominant quarter by taking a 10-point lead with just 2:21 remaining. Hostos then scored nine straight to make it a one-point game with under a minute to play. Monroe was then able to lock down on defense, also making 6-of-7 free throws down the stretch to hang on for a seven-point win.
Lyons finished up with 19 points to lead the Mustangs on Tuesday, matching Adams for a team-best eight rebounds and adding seven steals. Adams picked up 13 points and four blocks in the win. Baldwin earned a double-double with 15 points and an incredible 12 steals, also leading the Mustangs with seven assists.
The Mustangs will take back-to-back wins into a home contest against Rowan College at Burlington County on Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
