Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball Surpasses 2017-18 Win Total in Victory over Rowan Burlington

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 7, 2019 – With a 90-33 victory at the Monroe Athletic Complex over Rowan College at Burlington County on Thursday, the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team surpassed its previous season win total, improving to 18-6 overall on the year. The Barons drop to 13-6 overall with the loss.
 
The Mustangs came out firing in the first quarter, opening the game on an 11-0 run. After Rowan's first basket, the Mustangs responded with an 8-2 run to go ahead, 19-4. The Barons made a pair of free throws with 39 seconds left, but the Mustangs carried a 19-6 edge into the second.
 
The Mustangs pushed the lead to 22-6 before the Barons scored six straight, including four free throws, to get within 11. The Barons continued to find their way to the line, getting within nine at 26-17. Shanice Graves made a layup for Monroe with 1:09 remaining, and then Phyness Baldwin closed out the half with a buzzer-beating three to give the Mustangs a 31-17 lead heading into halftime.
 
The Mustangs took a commanding 30-point lead with a 16-0 run to open up the third quarter. A 12-0 run late in the frame pushed Monroe's lead to 43 points, giving the Mustangs a 67-24 advantage heading into the final frame.
 
Monroe opened the fourth on a 15-2 run to make it a 56-point game with just 5:39 left to play. The Mustangs' lead reached as many as 58 points, and they closed things out with a 57-point margin, their largest of the season.
 
Baldwin finished with a team-high 22 points, completing her second straight double-double with 10 assists. She also added five steals. Graves also registered a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, matching Baldwin's five steals and adding five assists. Destiny Jennings tied with Graves for a team-high 12 boards, adding eight points as well. Devon Adams finished with 11 points and a pair of blocks.
 
The Mustangs hit the road on Sunday, Feb. 10, when they visit Nassau Community College in Garden City, N.Y. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
