NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 19, 2019 – Fueled by a 58-point second half, the Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team rolled to a 94-52 victory over the ASA College JV team Tuesday evening at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 19-7 overall on the year with the win.
The Mustangs opened up the game on fire, scoring the first 10 points of the contest. The Avengers responded with a 9-2 run to get back within three, but the Mustangs quickly made it an eight-point game at 19-11 with 10:47 left in the half. Monroe's lead reached 12 points after back-to-back layups from
Jamal King and
Alfredo Robles, making it a 31-19 game with 5:22 on the clock. A 9-2 run for the Avengers brought them back within five, but the Mustangs closed out the half with a 5-2 run to take a 36-28 lead into halftime.
The Mustangs steadily improved upon their lead early in the second half, going up, 57-45, with 12:53 left to play. They then went on a 9-0 run to take a 21-point advantage, followed shortly after with a 12-point run that made it a 78-47 game. The Mustangs continued to roll the rest of the way, coming away with a 42-point victory.
Anthony Monti led the Mustangs with 15 points on Tuesday, adding five rebounds and three assists.
Javaughn Daniel picked up 14 points, while Robles finished with 12.
Rakim Bryant and
Kaynaan Longley each finished with 10 points. Joans Gjeci led the team with eight boards.
The Mustangs get back to work on Thursday, Feb. 21, when they visit The Robinson School in Newark, N.J. for an American Independent Post Grad and Collegiate Conference (AIPGCC) matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
