Mustangs JV Men’s Basketball Picks up Conference Win over The Robinson School

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 14, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team picked up a big win at the Monroe Athletic Complex on Thursday, defeating American Independent Post Grad and Collegiate Conference (AIPGCC) foe The Robinson School by a score of 64-52. The Mustangs improve to 16-7 overall with the win and 8-3 in conference play.
 
The Mustangs had control early on when Joans Gjeci drained a three to make it a 5-0 game. The Phoenix quickly turned things around to take an 8-7 advantage. Later, an 8-0 run for the Mustangs put them ahead, 17-10. The Phoenix responded with seven straight to tie it up, but Aaron Burton made the next two buckets to put the Mustangs back up by four with 8:22 to play in the half.
 
The Phoenix quickly tied the game, but the Mustangs then got back-to-back threes from Alfredo Robles and Rakim Bryant to take a six-point edge. The Mustangs maintained the gap until the Phoenix closed out the half on a 6-2 run, sending the game to the half with a 31-29 score in favor of the Mustangs.
 
Gjeci led the Mustangs with 11 points at the half. Burton added eight points and a team-high six rebounds. Javaughn Daniel led the team with four assists and two steals at the break.
 
The Phoenix opened the half with four straight to take a two-point lead, but a three by Robles put the Mustangs back on top by one. A free throw by the Phoenix tied the game, but the Mustangs followed with a 15-0 run, including eight points from Anthony Monti, to go up, 49-34. Later, an 8-3 run put the Mustangs up by 20 with just over seven minutes to play. Despite a late run by the Phoenix, the Mustangs held on to win by 12.
 
Gjeci and Burton matched for a team-high 16 points, while Burton completed a double-double with 14 rebounds. Monti finished with 12 points and seven boards. Daniel added six points, seven rebounds and four assists.
 
The Mustangs get back to work on Saturday, Feb. 16, when they visit the College of Mount Saint Vincent JV team for another AIPGCC matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
