NORTH EAST, Md., December 15, 2019 – Playing in its final game of the Cecil College Holiday Classic, the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team fell to Chesapeake College by a score of 78-59 Sunday afternoon. Chesapeake improves to 10-2 overall, while the Mustangs fall to 5-7.
After falling behind, 8-3, early in the first quarter, the Mustangs closed out the opening frame on a 7-0 run, capped off with a three by
Daja Wentz, to carry a 10-8 lead into the second.
The scoring picked up in the second quarter, with both teams going back-and-forth and trading small leads. The Mustangs went up, 23-19, with 3:02 left in the half, but the Skipjacks managed to go on a 12-3 run to close out the half, taking a 31-26 lead into the break.
Chesapeake carried that late momentum into the third quarter, opening with a 14-6 run to take a 13-point lead with 5:57 left in the period. The Skipjacks pushed their lead up to 15 with a layup in the final seconds of the quarter, taking a 57-42 edge into the fourth.
The Skipjacks scored the first 10 points of the fourth to go up by 25. The lead peaked at 26 late in the frame, but the Mustangs made a short run late to get within 19, but the final buzzer sounded shortly after.
India Keene capped off a big weekend for with 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists in the game for the Mustangs. Wentz added 17 points, six boards and three assists.
Devon Adams led the team with nine rebounds and added seven points.
Maya Crimes pulled down eight rebounds and contributed six points.
The Mustangs will not play again until Dec. 27, when they compete in the three-day National Title IX Holiday Invitational in Washington, D.C. The bracket for the tournament has yet to be determined.
