NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., December 14, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team dropped an 88-58 decision to Suffolk County Community College Saturday afternoon at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs drop to 3-6 with the loss, while the Sharks improve to 7-3.
Deandre Hayes scored the first two points of the game for the Mustangs, but the Sharks responded with 13 straight to go up by 11 early on. The run continued for the Sharks, as they pushed their lead to 22-6 just before the midway point of the half. The Mustangs then scored seven straight points to get back within nine, but six straight for the Sharks put the visitors back on top by 15. Suffolk kept its distance for the remainder of the half, taking a 41-24 lead into the break.
The Mustangs scored the first four points of the second half to get within 13, but the Sharks steadily improved upon their lead from there. Suffolk went up by 22 at the 15:39 mark, and continued to hold a sizable lead throughout. The Sharks went on to pick up the 88-58 win.
Jerald Campbell and
Onterio Miller matched for a team-high 11 points in Saturday's contest. Hayes,
Luis Quinones and
Erizander Laureano all picked up seven points apiece. Campbell led the team with seven rebounds, while Hayes, Quinones and
Enoch Johnson all tied for a team-high with two assists. Quinones also led the team with three steals.
The Mustangs will look to rebound on Saturday, Dec. 21, when they visit Rockland Community College in Suffern, N.Y. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE

There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
