NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., November 10, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team improved to a perfect 3-0 to start its season with an 89-48 victory over Westchester Community College on Sunday at the Monroe Athletic Complex, closing out the Monroe Classic tournament. Westchester drops to 1-4 with the loss.
The Mustangs started fast in Sunday's contest, quickly running out to a 15-2 lead midway through the first quarter. The lead grew to 22-4 with 1:01 remaining in the period, with the Mustangs later taking a 24-8 lead into the second quarter.
The Mustangs pulled out to a 21-point lead early in the second frame, but the Vikings were able to cut the deficit to 12 with 2:25 left in the half. The Mustangs then went on to score the final four points of the second quarter to take a 40-24 advantage into the half.
The Vikings made a three to open the third quarter, but the Mustangs scored the next nine points to take a 49-27 advantage. The Vikings got within 20 at 55-35, but the Mustangs then scored 10 straight to make it a 30-point game. A three at the end of the quarter for the Vikings left Monroe up, 67-40, heading into the fourth.
The Mustangs continued to pound it on in the fourth, going on a 12-5 run to push their lead to 34 points at 79-45. The lead reached 41 points on a jumper in the paint by
Taylor Holmes with 2:17 left, and finishing things off with a 41-point win at 89-48.
Daja Wentz had her second-straight big day, leading the team with 21 points while adding seven rebounds and two steals.
Ineysiah Surrell registered a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
Maya Crimes finished with 13 points and eight boards.
Cheyenne Talbot picked up 10 points, seven rebounds and a team-high seven assists.
Devon Adams added 10 points, seven boards and three blocks, while
Taylor Holmes was the sixth Mustang in double-figures with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Mustangs will hit the road for the first time this season on Thursday, Nov. 14, when they visit SUNY Sullivan in Loch Sheldrake, N.Y. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE

There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
