LOCH SHELDRAKE, N.Y., November 14, 2019 – In its first road game of the season, the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the year, falling at SUNY Sullivan, 85-77, Thursday evening. The Mustangs fall to 3-1 on the year with the loss, while the Generals improve to 3-1.
The Mustangs got off to a solid start on Thursday, jumping out to a 10-6 lead midway through the first quarter. The Mustangs later led, 16-11, but four straight for the Generals cut Monroe's advantage to one. The Mustangs then scored the final five points of the period to take a 21-15 lead into the second quarter.
The Generals quickly tied things up at 23 early in the second frame. The Mustangs jumped back on top, 27-23, but five straight by the home team gave the Generals a 28-27 edge. Monroe was once again up by three at 31-28, but a 15-0 run by Sullivan made it a 43-31 game in favor of the Generals. The Mustangs scored the next four points, but the Generals picked up the last two of the half to take a 45-35 lead into the break.
The Mustangs trailed, 49-40, early in the third quarter before chipping away at the deficit. A 10-3 run for Monroe got the Mustangs within two at 52-50, but a 10-2 run in favor of the Generals put them back up by 10. The Generals held on to that 10-point lead and took a 68-58 edge into the fourth quarter.
A pair of free throws by
Daja Wentz with 6:24 on the clock in the fourth got Monroe back within six points.
Cheyenne Talbot made a layup with 3:42 to play to cut the deficit to four. The Generals then pushed their lead right back out to nine, and were able to hold on to the lead the rest of the way to win by eight.
Talbot and Wentz matched for a team-high 15 points, while both pulled down seven rebounds apiece. Wentz dished out a team-high six assists, while Talbot was right behind with five.
Ineysiah Surrell added 11 points and another seven rebounds, while
Devon Adams picked up 10 points, as well as seven boards.
ToniRenee Blandford led the team with nine rebounds, adding five points and two steals.
Maya Crimes had another eight boards and nine points.
The Mustangs will look to bounce back when they next play on Saturday, Nov. 23, as part of the Monroe Thanksgiving Classic at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Monroe will take on Nassau Community College in the day's fifth and final game, with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m.
