Monroe Mustangs JV Men’s Basketball Falls in Final Seconds to Herkimer County JV

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., November 10, 2019 – A three-pointer in the final seconds of the game proved to be the difference on Sunday, as the Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team dropped a 78-75 decision to Herkimer County Community College JV at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Herkimer starts its season at 1-0, while the Mustangs fall to 1-1.
 
Sunday's contest got off to an even start, reaching a 6-6 tie five minutes into the first half. The Mustangs then went on a 6-0 run, which turned into a 10-2 run, to go up, 16-8. Monroe ran its lead all the way up to 21-10 after a three-point play by Enoch Johnson with 8:04 left in the half.
 
The Generals started to get back in the game late in the first half. An 8-2 run made it a 22-18 game. Shortly after, Herkimer County tied the game at 25-25. Both teams picked up the scoring down the stretch, going back-and-forth until the halftime buzzer, leaving the Mustangs up by just three points, 36-33.
 
The scoring picked up for both sides early in the second frame, seeing the Generals jump into the lead on a three by Tavon Bates with 15:12, making it a 46-44 game in favor of the visitors. The Mustangs went back up by four at 54-50, but the Generals turned it around to take the lead back.
 
The Generals led, 65-61, with 6:44 left to play, and were able to continue holding off the Mustangs to lead, 69-63, with 4:13 on the clock. The Mustangs then erased a 71-65 deficit to tie the game at 71-71 with just 1:52 to play.
 
Mecca McCollough put the Generals back in the lead with a jumper, but Jedidiah Ashton tied it right back up for the Mustangs with 56 seconds left. Joshua Wilcox put one in off the glass for Herkimer to put the visitors up, 75-73, with 33 seconds on the clock. Ashton went to the line for Monroe and made both to tie it with 21 seconds remaining, but Keneeff Danzy made a three from the top of the arc with 2.4 seconds left to win the game.
 
Ashton led the Mustangs with a double-double, totaling 22 points and 13 rebounds as well as a pair of blocks in the game. Jerald Campbell was next with 18 points and five boards. Luis Quinones contributed 10 points and seven rebounds, as well as team highs of three assists and three steals. Enoch Johnson reached double-figures with 10 points to go with seven rebounds.
 
The Mustangs will remain home for their next contest on Thursday, Nov. 14, when they host Touro College at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
