No. 1 Monroe Mustangs Women’s Soccer Nets 10 in Victory over Suffolk County

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 8, 2019 – In the team's first game in more than two weeks, the No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team showed no signs of rust, as the Mustangs took down Suffolk County Community College on Tuesday, 10-0, at Skidelsky Field at Flowers Park. The Mustangs remain unbeaten at 7-0 on the year with the win, while the Sharks drop to 4-5.
 
The Mustangs had a few missed opportunities early on, but broke through in the 12th minute when Luana Grabias perfectly set up Laia Munoz Danon in the box score a goal to put Monroe ahead, 1-0. In the 31st minute, Regina Fiabema received a cross from Marlen Guevara and beat the keeper to double the lead. Just a few minutes later, Paula DePaiva Toledo led Sydoney Clarke down offensive half of the field toward the right corner of the box, where she fired into the short end of the net on a strong shot off the keeper to put the Mustangs up, 3-0, heading into halftime.
 
The Mustangs really found their rhythm in the second half, beginning with Clarke's second of the day at the 55:07 mark that made it a 4-0 game. Just 30 seconds later, Mayara Queiroz Reis sent a ball up the field for Mayra de Lima, who capitalized on the great cross and beat the keeper to make it a 5-0 game. Four minutes later, Queiroz Reis set de Lima up again for nearly the exact same play, resulting in another score for Monroe to make it a 6-0 game.
 
In the 65th minute, Toledo got on the board off a pass from Clarke to push the lead to seven. de Lima then completed her hat trick in the 70th minute off another Clarke assist to push Monroe's lead to eight. Barbara Serrano then got in on the action after being set up by Clarke to net her first of the year and make it a 9-0 game at the 74:47 mark. Clarke then netted one more of her own just before the buzzer to reach the 10-0 final score.
 
Stefane Rosa made one save to pick up the shutout win and improve to 7-0 on the season. Emily Deehan started the game for the Sharks and allowed three goals in the first half to take the loss and fall to 2-2.
 
Clarke had a big day for the Mustangs, finishing with nine points on three goals and three assists. de Lima also had three goals in the win. Munoz Danon, Fiabema, Toledo and Serrano each had a goal in the win. Queiroz Reis provided a pair of assists, while each of Guevara, Grabias and Toledo had one apiece.
 
The Mustangs head up to Rochester, N.Y. on Saturday, Oct. 12, to take on Monroe Community College in the Mustangs' final regular-season contest of the season. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 12 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
