ROCHESTER, N.Y., October 12, 2019 – In the second "Monroe Derby" matchup of the season, the No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team had five different student-athletes score en route to a 5-1 victory over Monroe Community College on the road Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs improve to 8-0 on the season with the win, while the Tribunes fall to 8-4-2 overall.
The Mustangs got off to a strong start, as
Sydoney Clarke scored in the seventh minute off an assist from
Laia Munoz Danon to give the Mustangs a quick 1-0 advantage. After the Mustangs blanked the Tribunes in their first matchup earlier this season, the Tribunes quickly avoided being shut out again when Kimberly McPhearson scored at the 20:34 mark to tie the game at one. Neither team was able to add another scoring in the first half, sending the game to halftime with a 1-1 stalemate.
The Mustangs once again got things going quickly in the new half, as
Luana Grabias scored at 50:07 to give the Mustangs a 2-1 edge. Munoz Danon then gave the Mustangs a two-goal lead with a score in the 65th minute that made it a 3-1 game.
Regina Fiabema added to the Mustangs' run in the 71st minute off an assist from
Paula DePaiva Toledo to push the lead to 4-1. Toledo then got on the board herself at 82:44 to put the Mustangs up, 5-1.
Stefane Rosa stopped three shots in net to improve to 8-0 on the season. Tribune goalkeeper Meryl Wakefield made four saves but allowed five goals to shoulder the loss.
Toledo and Munoz Danon each finished with three points in the win, picking up a goal and an assist apiece. Fiabema and Clarke each scored a goal, while Grabias netted what proved to be the game-winner early in the second half.
The Mustangs outshot their hosts, 14-8, on the afternoon, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Mustangs also had five corner kicks, while the Tribunes had just three.
Saturday's contest was the final regular-season contest on the schedule for the Mustangs. They are scheduled to play next on Friday, Nov. 1, when they host Region XIX's Community College of Rhode Island for a chance to advance to the District Championship. That game is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. at Skidelsky Field at Flowers Park.
