Monroe Mustangs Women’s Volleyball Defeats Queensborough in Three

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 3, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team had a triumphant return to the Monroe Athletic Complex on Thursday, defeating Queensborough Community College in three sets to run its winning streak to five. The Mustangs improve to 9-8 on the season with the win, while the Tigers drop to 12-3.

The Mustangs jumped out to an 8-3 lead early in the first set, only losing those three points on their own errors, forcing the Tigers to take a timeout. The timeout did nothing to stop the Mustangs' momentum, as they scored four more points to take a 12-3 lead before the Tigers registered their next point. The Mustangs led, 18-8, before going on a six-point run to reach set point. After one final point by the Tigers, an explosive kill by Zassmine Birdwell closed out the set with a 25-9 win for Monroe.

The second stanza got off to a similar start, seeing Monroe roll to a 16-5 lead before the Tigers chose to use a timeout. The Mustangs never lost their groove, galloping to a 25-8 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Tigers got the early jump in the third frame, taking a 2-1 lead. The Mustangs later jumped out to an 11-3 lead before the Tigers scored four straight points to get within four. Monroe then went on an 8-1 run to take a 19-8 advantage. The Mustangs reached match point at 24-10 before the Tigers picked up two more points. Nia Cornegy then finished the match with a kill to give Monroe a 25-12 win.
