NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 5, 2019 – After falling on the road to CNC Leadership Prep by three a few weeks ago, the Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team avenged that loss with a 104-69 victory over the Lions on Saturday at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 9-5 on the season and 5-1 in American Independent Post Grad and Collegiate Conference (AIPGCC) play.
The Mustangs got off to a solid start, taking a 10-point lead at 19-9 by the 13:21 mark of the first half. The Lions were able to get back within six, but the Mustangs slowly built upon their lead to go back up by 10 at 30-20 with just over nine minutes left in the half. CNC got back within six, but the Mustangs followed with a 13-3 run to take a 16-point advantage with 2:10 left before the break. The Mustangs closed out the half with a 47-33 edge.
Javaughn Daniel led the Mustangs with 10 points at the break. He matched
Aaron Burton's four rebounds, while Burton also scored eight points.
Alfredo Robles scored eight points as well, while
Anthony Monti added seven points and a team-high six assists.
A 7-0 run to open the second half left the Mustangs up, 54-33. Monroe kept a sizeable lead, later going up, 61-35. A 9-0 run later in the half put the Mustangs up by 33 points with 11:07 still left to play. Six straight points shortly after gave the Mustangs a 36-point advantage at 85-49. The Mustangs continued to hold a big lead through the final buzzer, coming away with a 35-point win.
Burton led the Mustangs with 15 points and eight rebounds in the win. Monti completed a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists, adding a team-high five steals as well. Daniel and
Luis Quinones matched with 13 points apiece, while Robles matched Monti's 11.
The Mustangs hit the road on Wednesday, Jan. 5, to take on Metro BDA in another AIPGCC matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
