NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 17, 2019 – Lifted by a big first half, the Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team rolled to a 63-39 victory over ASA College JV Thursday evening at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 11-6 on the season, while the Avengers fall to 0-8-1.
The Mustangs got off to a strong start, jumping out to a 14-4 lead in Thursday's contest. Shortly after, a 7-0 run put the Mustangs ahead, 26-8, and another big run made it a 35-13 game with 5:43 left in the first half. The Avengers managed to outscore the Mustangs, 8-7, over the final five minutes of the half, but the Mustangs took a 42-21 advantage into the break.
Luis Quinones had a great first half, netting 15 points to lead all scorers through 20 minutes.
Alfredo Robles added eight points and three rebounds, while
Aaron Burton led the floor with six boards.
The scoring slowed significantly in the second half, seeing ASA go on a 17-7 run across the first 14 minutes of the half to get within 11. The Mustangs closed out the game on a 12-0 run to pick up the 24-point victory.
Quinones finished with 17 points to lead the Mustangs Thursday evening, adding four boards and three assists. Burton added eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds in the win.
Javaughn Daniel and
Rakim Bryant each netted nine points.
The Mustangs get back to work on Saturday, Jan. 26, when they visit Herkimer County Community College in Herkimer, N.Y. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
